EMC, a Microsoft Gold Business Partner through the acquisition of Internosis and owner of Documentum through the acquisition of Documentum, Inc., announced on October 3, 2006 that they are working together with Microsoft to provide integration between EMC's Documentum content management software and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007. In addition, Office 2007 users will be able to access the Documentum platform from within applications like MS Word. When SharePoint Server 2007 is released in January, EMC will release integration software for Documentum that will add functionality without requiring an upgrade to the Documentum repository or base software.
This is a win for companies that has both Documentum and SharePoint in-house and want to integrate the two technologies. The key feature of SharePoint Server 2007 that EMC is targeting is its content management capabilities. That includes: list item versioning, list item meta-data, backup of lists, workflows of list items, archival of list items, recycle bin functionality, etc. EMC will also provide single sign-on capabilities so that users in Documentum can seamlessly connect to SharePoint Server 2007 and vice-versa.
